Keeping control over data security threats is especially challenging in an environment where many employees are working remotely. Phishing and ransomware attacks have multiplied since the start of the pandemic in March. Information security spending will increase by 6% in 2021, where spending by federal, state and local governments, and telecom has been very strong. Businesses are implementing new measures to ensure the security of both in-person and remote workers, including: virtual private networks, two factor authentication and USB security tokens, disabling non-secure web applications, installing robust threat detection software, and hosting more frequent security awareness training sessions to help employees stay vigilant.

The old security tips still apply. Be sure to keep your operating system and applications up to date, keep extensive back-ups, and have a disaster recovery plan in place for worst case scenarios.–Kiplinger Letter (25 September 2020). Vol. 97, No. 39.
