Cold plates and liquid cooling components for high-heat equipment

Cold plates and liquid cooling components for high-heat equipment

When air cooling is not enough, a cold plate can move heat from a component or assembly into a controlled liquid-cooling path.

The quote depends on more than plate dimensions. Material, flatness, channel design, fittings, joining method, pressure requirements, surface finish, plating, testing, annual volume, and target timing all affect how the component should be manufactured and reviewed.

Start with the thermal and mechanical requirements

A cold plate RFQ should explain what the assembly must do, not only what it looks like.

Useful inputs include:

  • Heat load and operating conditions
  • Coolant type, flow, temperature, and pressure requirements
  • Overall envelope and mounting interface
  • Contact surface, flatness, and finish requirements
  • Material requirements, commonly aluminum, copper, or another conductive material
  • Internal channel or fluid-path concept
  • Fitting type and location
  • Joining method if already specified
  • Plating, coating, corrosion, or compatibility requirements
  • Leak, pressure, flow, cleanliness, and inspection requirements
  • Annual volume and target timing

If the internal flow path is not finalized, send the thermal objective and available packaging constraints. That is more useful than presenting an unproven design as fixed.

Manufacturing paths that may be reviewed

Cold plate construction can involve machining, drilled passages, fitted tubing or channels, brazing, bonding, welding, surface finishing, plating, and assembly. The appropriate route depends on heat transfer, pressure, envelope, volume, test requirements, and program economics.

Lupton reviews the project information and helps move it toward the appropriate manufacturing review. The manufacturer must confirm design feasibility, process, testing, capacity, pricing, and lead time.

Where cold plates may apply

Cold plates and related thermal components may be considered for:

  • Power electronics
  • Data center and computing equipment
  • Energy storage and conversion systems
  • Industrial controls
  • Medical and laboratory equipment
  • Defense and aerospace electronics
  • High-heat electrical or electronic assemblies

Application examples do not establish project fit. Drawings and requirements must be reviewed.

Questions that improve the quote

Before sending the RFQ, confirm:

  1. What heat must be removed?
  2. What component or surface must contact the plate?
  3. What fluid, flow, pressure, and temperature range apply?
  4. What flatness, surface finish, or interface requirements matter?
  5. What leak, pressure, flow, cleanliness, or inspection tests are required?
  6. What material, coating, corrosion, and fluid-compatibility requirements apply?
  7. What annual volume and launch timing are expected?

Missing answers do not prevent an early discussion. They should be identified so the next review is productive.

How Lupton helps

Lupton can review the drawing, thermal objective, materials, volume, testing, and timing, then help determine which manufacturing questions need to be resolved before formal quote review.

Start the review

Working on a cold plate or liquid-cooling component?

Send the drawing, thermal requirements, annual volume, test requirements, and timing. If the design is still early, use the website assistant to discuss the application first.

FAQs

What information is needed for a cold plate quote?

Send the drawing or CAD model, thermal load, coolant, flow and pressure requirements, material, dimensions, flatness, fittings, surface treatment, testing, annual volume, and timing.

Can a cold plate be machined from aluminum or copper?

Aluminum and copper are commonly considered because of thermal conductivity, but the correct material depends on weight, conductivity, corrosion, coolant compatibility, joining method, cost, and application requirements.

Can Lupton help if the flow path is not finalized?

Yes. Send the heat load, envelope, contact surfaces, coolant information, and open questions. Lupton can help identify what the manufacturing team will need before confirming feasibility and quote details.

Does Lupton guarantee thermal performance?

No. Thermal performance and manufacturability must be established through the appropriate engineering, manufacturing, and test review.
